Day 29: Tucson to El Paso

The students enjoyed sleeping in this morning as we didn't have to be on the bus until around 9:30. We said goodbye to the luxurious Omni Tucson National Golf Resort and Spa and headed toward the Arizona border.

We stopped for lunch a few hours later in Wilcox, AZ. Around this time the temperature outside the bus was registering at 91 degrees. An hour or two later it had risen to about 105 degrees as we traveled through New Mexico into Texas.  We stopped at a rest area just outside the Texas border where students beat the heat by indulging in cold Coca-Cola from the vending machines. Many sought out any inch of shade they could find before returning to the bus.

As the bus approached El Paso, TX the U.S./Mexico border also came into sight. From El Paso, the city of Ciudad Juarez can be seen just over the Rio Grande. The students marveled over the difference in ways of life from one side of the fence and river to the other. However, at night it's lights fade easily into the lights of El Paso as if there is no difference in the two.

After checking in to the hotel and having some time to get ready for dinner, the group headed to Carlos and Mickey's. This is a Tex-Mex restaurant known for its lively atmosphere and authentic food. The group enjoyed chips and salsa that had a kick so strong it was turning faces red and making students eager for water. The main meal consisted of cheese enchiladas, beef tacos, and rolled chicken tortillas covered in melted queso. To top it off we were served sopapillas dripped with honey as dessert.

The group is now back at the hotel and safely tucked in for bed with full bellies. Check in tomorrow to see how the trip to San Antonio goes!
