Day 8: Durango to Salt Lake City

The Winston Salem Grand Western Tour has officially been on the road for one week! After traveling through 9 states in 7 days, we have now made it to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Today's adventure began with an early morning wakeup in Durango, CO. After breakfast, we hit the road with our eyes set on Utah. The drive through Utah's Canyonlands region was awe-inspiring. Some of the crew mentioned they had never seen anything quite like it before!

On our way to Arches National Park, the crew stopped for a picnic lunch in Moab, Utah. The rest area was a perfect stop for our group because it had shaded picnic tables and a playground for teenagers (pictured below). This was just a taste of the fun they would have at Arches.

As we drove into Arches National Park, the bus clocked an outside temperature of 108 degrees! Whew, that's even hotter than North Carolina. Even with the heat, the crew enjoyed the scenic ride and climbing the rocks.

Arches National Park has over 2,000 arches that range in size from a three-foot opening to the largest, Landscape Arch, that measures a 306-foot arch. According to the National Park Service, water and ice, extreme temperatures, and underground salt movement are responsible for these pieces of art. During our tour we saw the Balanced Rock, the North and South Windows, the Turret Arch, and the Sand Dune Arch, just to name a few.

The pictures below show how daring and fearless the crew was today. I was impressed with how they bounced from rock to rock with such ease!

We arrived in Salt Lake City just in time for dinner and a little relaxation time. It has been an exciting day and everyone is looking forward to traveling to Wyoming tomorrow!
